It depends on the diesel engine. Some need to be towed to a shop and the injector taken apart, others just need to be cranked for a minute and maybe a little starting fluid. Newer, passenger vehicles and pickup trucks generally start a lot easier than some of the older and/or larger engines. Ther e is no need to take an injector out if you ran it out of fuel. The first thing to do is to remove the fuel filter and fill it with diesel, then reinstall full fuel filter Next, if the engine does not start quickly, crack an injector line loose to bleed the air. When the engine is running re-tighten the fuel line. ![]() 6.9 iDI Engines On the 6.9 IDI engines there is a bleed valve on the filter housing. It looks just like the valve stem on your tires. Just depress the needle while someone is cranking the starter until the air is bled out and fuel is flowing. ![]() I like to use an old bicycle pump hose clamped on the valve and drain the fuel into a plastic container to prevent fuel from spraying all over the engine compartment. Other option: for Manual Transmission This happened to me with our diesel VW Beetle, and we thought we'd have to take it to a shop. While having my Dad tow me with his car, he said i should stick it in first while he was dragging me, after a while it looked like it had started, so i put the clutch in and tried starting it. So looks like you can put it into gear to get the gas going if you have someone to push you. NNot knowing engines that old I can only offer suggestions: n. Crack (loosen the hose fittings) progressively on the fuel system while trying to start it. This will operate the fuel pump and air should shoot out of your cracked fitting until just fuel comes out. Quick report delphi 2010 books. The step-by-step instructions given by Steema led me to step number 15: '15. Build the project. Dont burn out the starter. Even the oldest fuel filter mounts I've seen (65's as far back as I've gone) have a plug of some sort somewhere. Now all you need is a pressure vessel with appropriate hoses and fittings such that you can force fuel without air into the fuel system. This is all im saying on that one. Cummins fuel filter assemblies come with a hand operated pump. If your up for it refit a cummins type filter assembly and start pumpin. The largest one I have worked on was a v-16, (2 ea. 871 Detroits doweled in tandem with one common crankshaft. I don't remember the horsepower but it was in a 50 ton rated Euclid dumptruck. Im a captian and i ran a 115 footer that had twin v-16s huge and runs forever been accross the Atlantic to A frica with it twice only really minor problems I believe the largest Detroit Diesel ever produced would have to be the 20v149. It is a V-20, with 149 cubic inches per cylinder. This behemoth is used in mining and other applications.
